Why carriers look for a Bobtail alternative
Two complaints come up most. The first is the contract. Bobtail's factoring FAQ says that after a 90-day trial period it moves customers into a long-term contract (Bobtail factoring FAQ). The second is fuel money: asked whether it offers fuel advances or fuel cards, the same FAQ points only to its fleet card.
Both problems are solvable, but they point to different companies. This page compares Bobtail with other freight factors using only terms each company publishes on its own site. Where a company does not publish something, we say so.
What Bobtail publishes
Bobtail is more specific than most of this category, which is to its credit. Its FAQ says:
- A single factoring rate. The fee is "usually 1.5%–3.5%" per invoice, and rates vary based on volume and credit risk (Bobtail factoring FAQ).
- No reserve. The FAQ describes its contract as having no reserve requirements, so you are not waiting on a reserve release after the broker pays.
- No add-on fees. It contrasts itself with factors that charge extra for processing, ACH transfers and invoices, and says it has no hidden fees.
- Same-day funding. Invoices submitted before 11 AM EST, Monday through Friday, are funded the same day by 6 PM EST.
Two points the old version of this page got wrong or left out:
- Bobtail is recourse, not non-recourse. Its own article on the subject says it "provides recourse factoring for its clients" and cites a small-fleet recourse rate of 3.24% (Bobtail — Recourse vs. non-recourse factoring). If a broker does not pay, expect that invoice to come back to you. Our recourse vs. non-recourse guide explains what that means in practice.
- Its own pages describe the contract two ways. The factoring landing page is headlined "Hassle-Free Factoring With No Long-Term Contracts" and says you can cancel any time in the first 90 days without penalty (Bobtail — Factoring). The FAQ says the trial is followed by a long-term contract. Get the post-trial term length, renewal terms and notice period in writing before you start.
Why the trial matters more than it sounds. Ninety days is long enough to move your broker relationships, send notices of assignment and get your paperwork flowing through one company's app. By the time the trial ends, switching again is a real project. That is how trial-then-contract works everywhere, not a criticism of Bobtail in particular, but it is worth knowing before you start.
If your issue is the contract
Look for a factor that says plainly what happens when you want to leave.
- Thunder Funding says it will "NEVER ask you to sign a long-term commitment" and markets a 90-day trial (Thunder Funding).
- eCapital says freight customers "are not required to sign long term contracts" (eCapital — Freight factoring).
- 5 Star Freight Factoring offers month-to-month options you can end at any time (5 Star Freight Factoring).
- BasicBlock advertises "No contracts" and no minimums (BasicBlock).
"No long-term contract" still usually means a notice period and a buyout of open invoices when you leave. Ask for both in writing.
Porter Freight Funding goes the other direction: it advertises an introductory rate of 1.5% for the first 60 days (Porter Freight Funding — Intro factoring rate). An introductory rate usually comes with a committed term, so ask how long the agreement runs and whether it is recourse before you compare it with Bobtail. Porter's site blocked our automated checks, so we could not confirm the full offer terms.
If your issue is fuel advances
A fuel advance releases part of a load's value at pickup instead of at delivery. For an owner-operator who is tight on cash between settlements, that can matter more than a quarter point on the rate. Bobtail's fleet card gives fuel savings at participating locations, but that is a discount, not an advance.
- Thunder Funding says its mobile app takes fuel advance requests and that its fuel card gives access to discounted rates (Thunder Funding).
- 5 Star Freight Factoring offers fuel advances, which it describes as "an advance on expected fuel costs before you haul the load" (5 Star Freight Factoring).
- TBS Factoring lists fuel advances and discount fuel cards with no credit check required (TBS Factoring).
- OTR Solutions and eCapital both market fuel card programs with discounts (OTR Solutions, eCapital — Freight factoring). Neither home page describes a fuel advance on the load itself, so ask.
None of these companies publishes the fee on its fuel advance. Treat the feature as present and the price as unknown until you have it in writing. Our fuel card and fuel advance guide compares the programs in more detail.
What each company publishes
The point of this table is what is missing from it. Most of this category does not publish all its terms, which narrows the field quickly when you compare on published information alone.
| Company | Rate published | Contract terms published | Fuel advances | Recourse |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bobtail | Usually 1.5%–3.5% | 90-day trial, then long-term (FAQ) | None published; fleet card | Recourse |
| Thunder Funding | Not published | No long-term commitment, 90-day trial | Yes, via app | Not stated on home page |
| 5 Star Freight Factoring | As low as 1% at volume | Month to month available | Yes | Both offered |
| BasicBlock | 2.5% | No contracts | Not stated | Non-recourse |
| eCapital | Not published | No long-term contract required | Fuel card program, no advance described | Not stated |
| Porter Freight Funding | 1.5% intro, first 60 days | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | Not confirmed |
| Riviera Finance | Not published | Not published | Not published; fuel card offered | Non-recourse |
Sources: each company's own pages as linked in this guide and listed under Sources, checked November 2026. Riviera's freight page lists a 95% advance and no monthly minimums (Riviera Finance — Freight factoring), and its home page describes its factoring as non-recourse (Riviera Finance). Rates and terms change and are often negotiated per customer, so treat this as a starting point, not a quote.
Before you switch, price the whole thing
Bobtail's single rate with no reserve is genuinely simpler to model than a tiered rate with a reserve release, and simplicity has value. But the advertised rate is rarely the whole cost anywhere in this category. Wire fees, ACH fees, per-invoice charges, monthly minimums and termination fees can push a lower headline rate above a competitor's. Our breakdowns of what freight factoring costs and hidden factoring fees list the charges to look for.
Run the same month of your own invoices through each quote before you decide, using the factoring calculator. It is the only comparison that reflects how you actually haul.
Frequently asked questions
Does Bobtail require a long-term contract?
Its FAQ says that after a 90-day trial period it moves customers into a long-term contract, while its factoring page advertises no long-term contracts and penalty-free cancellation during the first 90 days. Ask for the post-trial term length and notice period in writing before the trial starts.
Does Bobtail offer fuel advances?
Not that it publishes. Its FAQ answers the fuel advance question by pointing to its fleet card. If advancing against a load at pickup matters to how you run, that is the clearest reason to look elsewhere.
Is Bobtail recourse or non-recourse?
Recourse. Bobtail's own article on recourse factoring says it provides recourse factoring for its clients. If a broker fails to pay, you should expect to be responsible for that invoice.
What is the closest alternative to Bobtail's no-reserve model?
None of the companies above publishes an identical structure. Most of the category advances a percentage up front and releases the rest, minus fees, after the broker pays. If no reserve is what you value, ask each company directly whether it will quote without one.
How long does switching factoring companies take?
It depends mostly on your current contract's notice period. The incoming factor buys out your open invoices, the outgoing factor releases its lien by filing a termination statement under UCC 9-513, and your brokers are sent new payment instructions. Our switching guide has the full sequence.
